Robert Edward Lee, Jr., 75 of Austin, Texas was born in Williamsburg, Virginia on October 19, 1944 to Laura Belle Council-Lee and Rev. Robert E. Lee, Sr. Robert accepted his walk with Christ at an early age beginning his spiritual journey at Antioch Baptist Church in Waco, Tx. Later in life he transitioned his spiritual walk through his membership at Peaceful St. James Baptist Church. Robert’s walk with God was completed through his years of membership at Freedom Home Baptist Church in Austin, Tx. where he served as a deacon, a member of the Sanctuary Choir as well as the Male Chorus. He appreciated and thoroughly enjoyed his stewardship in every capacity being able to serve his Pastor, Rev. Oscar B. Howard and the Freedom Home church family.
Robert attended public school in Waco, Tx. through high school attending A.J. Moore High School. Robert was an all-around athlete and student of academia through the strong guidance of his aunt, Josephine Walton who raised Robert as her son from a young age. He was well known for his athleticism in football where he earned numerous accolades and awards throughout his high school career leading to his college football career at University of Colorado where he earned his Business Degree. Robert also served his country for several years in the United States National Guard.
Robert was an active member of the Austin community as an entrepreneur of his own businesses, Assistant Manager at Handy Andy Grocery and Manager of Foodland Grocery store. Robert served in a variety of positions with the Austin Urban League as well as a community liaison for the City of Austin City Council. He was also an advocate for higher education and taught Business & Communication classes at Austin Community College. Robert retired from the City of Austin as a Power Plant Engineer after 34 years where he took pride in the service of work he provided for Austin residents. He is known in the community as “Mr. Lee”, a man always willing to assist anyone gain self-awareness, continuous knowledge through education and gainful employment to enhance their lives. Robert was united in marriage to Madeline Townsend and to this union their daughter, Jearnal was born.
Robert departed this life on Tuesday, January 14, 2020. He was preceded in death by his mother Laura Belle Council-Lee who passed shortly after his birth, his father Rev. Robert E. Lee, Sr., his aunt, Josephine Walton and his uncle, Mr. Robert Walton who raised him as their own son and whom he loved and affectionately regarded as his mother and father. Robert is survived by his daughters, Jearnal Lee-Williams and Tiffiney Sutton-Rogers (Amon); grandchildren, Christopher, Jalaya and Rakiah Williams and Jackson Rogers; his loving cousins, other family members, a proud family of honorary sisters and brothers of A.J. Moore High School-Class of 1963 and a multitude of loving friends.
