December 30, 1924 ~ July 15, 2020 (age 95)

Lois Evelyn Johnson Palfrey

Lois Evelyn Johnson Palfrey was born in Dallas, Texas, on December 30, 1924 to Reverend D. Edwin Johnson and Ila Mae Walker Johnson.  She was baptized at an early age at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Ardmore Oklahoma, by her father, who was the Pastor.  When the family moved to Texarkana, Texas, she joined Sunset Baptist Church where her father also pastored.

She graduated from Paul Lawrence Dunbar High School in Texarkana, obtained BS and Master degrees from Prairie View A&M, and did further study at the University of Wisconsin.

In August, 1949, she was united in holy matrimony with John Alfred Palfrey at Sunset Baptist Church, with her father officiating. To this union, two children were born, Evelyn Johnnette and Vanessa Lititia.

Lois began her teaching career in Atlanta, Texas, then taught Home Economics at Dunbar High School in Texarkana for many years. When the family moved to Dallas, Texas in 1966, she taught all grade levels in DISD.  She was promoted to Reading Specialist, then Facilitator of Elementary Operations, and Assistant Principal. After working nearly 25 years in DISD, in 1990, she retired. In 2011, Lois moved to Austin, Texas to be with her children and grandchildren.

Lois adapted easily to life in Austin.  She joined Wesley United Methodist Church.  She loved her church family, and especially enjoyed the camaraderie of the 55 Plus Ministry. She was an avid reader and a member of Folktales Book Club. She was a prodigious bridge player. She belonged to the Sunday Brunch Bridge Club and the Grand Slam Bridge Club and was a guest at many others. For many years, she also enjoyed travelling the country to participate in duplicate bridge tournaments.  She was also a fearsome domino player.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her four siblings, Esther Lorraine Johnson, David Edwin Johnson, III, Lacy Kirk Johnson, and Gloria Rhea Johnson White.

Lois leaves to mourn her daughters - Evelyn Palfrey McKee (Darwin) and Vanessa Palfrey Tisdale (Dawn); four grandchildren - John Johnson McKee, Meredith McKee Koomson (Edward), Ellen Tisdale Brazelton (Antonio), Angela Lois Tisdale; 3 great grandchildren - John Andre McKee,  Aiyanna Michelle McKee, and Benjamin Ali Brazelton.
