Johnnie Mae Crenshaw Hearne was born on July 12, 1927, in Elroy, Texas, to Ed and Sallie Crenshaw.

She grew up attending Austin public schools, as well as Huston-Tillotson University.  She was the first Black employee in sales at Montgomery Ward, working in the candy department.  Later, Johnnie worked for the state, first in the Texas Parks and Wildlife division and then for the State of Texas Comptroller, until her retirement.

She loved her husband Lawrence, who was a long-time member of St. James’ Episcopal Church.  Johnnie also became an active member in this church community, building deep and sustaining relationships through the Episcopal Church Women and Connections groups.  She volunteered whenever needed, and her church family was a great joy to her.

Johnnie was also a member of the East Austin Garden Club and the Red Hat Society.

Johnnie is survived by her daughter, Carla Echols Allen (Joshua Sr.) of Beaumont, TX; sisters, Berenice Crenshaw (William) of Dallas, TX, and Arthur Gene Crenshaw Pleasant (Ray) of Minnesota; her grandchildren, Quincy Riggins (San Diego, CA), Donald Porter, Jr. (Austin, TX), Tena Porter West (Houston, TX), and Shayla Porter, (Dallas, TX); and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and wonderful friends.

Blessed with a long life, Johnnie is now reunited with her parents, brothers, husband, and three sons.
