Jo Ann Pleasant Simms was born to Hershel and Marjorie Clark Pleasant on November 21, 1957 in Austin, Texas. She attended Austin public schools and graduated from Sidney Lanier High School. She was the proud mother of three children: Derrick, Felicia and Latasha Nicole Simms.
She was baptized at the Greater Works Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Leonard D. James, Sr. She remained a member until her passing.
Jo Ann was currently employed with the State of Texas Workforce Commission. She retired and returned to work for a total of 40 years. She was an active member of the African American Culture Society (AACS).
She enjoyed spending time and supporting her grandchildren in their sports activities and other events. She LOVED her grandchildren. Her hobbies included baking and decorating cakes and cookies as well as playing BINGO. She will be fondly remembered for her scrumptious German Chocolate and various pound cakes, and her Mississippi Mud Pie!
Jo Ann made her transition from earth to her heavenly home on January 25, 2020. She was preceded in death by her grandparents L. D. and Havannah Clark, Willie Mae Clark, Guthrie and Mamie Chambers Johnson, and Jack Pleasant; parents, Hershel Pleasant and Marjorie Pleasant Blaine; and brother Minister Marvin Pleasant.
To celebrate her life’s legacy and cherish her memories she leaves: Son, Derrick Simms and two devoted daughters Felicia and Latasha “Nikki” Simms all of Austin; One sister, Jacqueline Pleasant and two brothers Hershel and Michael Pleasant all of Austin; two Aunts Dorothy Scott (Melvin) of Pflugerville, Texas and Jewell Davidson of Austin, Texas; 8 grandchildren Malik, Re’ina, Caleb, Kameron, Kalin, Kiana, Keon and Vanessa; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
This quiet but determined woman of God will be truly missed by all who knew her.
