James Lafayette Thompson Sr. (affectionately known as “Gooney”) was born on March 12, 1939 in Dale, TX to the late Fate Lafayette Thompson and Thelma Brown Thompson. James was an only child born to their union. On June 26, 2020 he wrote the final chapter of his earthly life.
He accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior at an early age at Dale Corinth United Methodist Church and his love for Him was demonstrated in his service as a trustee to his church St. Marks United Methodist Church and his community.
James was raised in Dale, TX and moved to Lockhart, TX at a young age, where he graduated from Carver High School and began working in construction. As a young adult he worked with his father as a home builder and later went on to establish his own business, Thompson & Thompson Builders. James was a virtuoso, a builder extraordinaire; he could build a house without plans. His business was operated until his health began to fail in December, 2019.
James loved to bar-b-que and was famous for his tender, flavorful, mouthwatering briskets. He created custom woodworks like trinket and jewelry boxes, cabinets, chests, and customized woodgrain ceilings. James fondly listened to Blues and Gospel music. He had a beautiful tenor voice and even recorded a Gospel album. In his downtime he could be found watching Westerns, Lonesome Dove and Quigley Down Under, and anytime it was showing he enjoyed watching The Ten Commandments. He loved to hang out in Dale with his cousins, especially the Brite brothers.
He treasured the outdoors, and spending time in his “honey hole”. Among his many talents, James fancied gardening, planting squash, cantaloupe, tomatoes and hot peppers. Annually, he enjoyed traveling to Corpus Christi, TX and Canyon Lake, TX. James loved to spoil his family with love, attention and just about anything in his power to gift and provide.
James was a loyal and faithful husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, great-great grandfather brother in-law, cousin and friend.
James was preceded in death by his parents and his wife of 32 years and mother of his three children Norma Jean Eustace Thompson.
He leaves to celebrate, cherish, and honor his life, his wife of 26 years, Aesha N. Thompson; his children, James Thompson Jr (Ester); Phyllis Thomas (Brian); Pamela Orr (Dwayne); Aginah Spencer; Amera Rashid-Boyd (Willie); Nashid A. Rashid II; Adilah Rashid; Nur Rashid (Rebecca); and Na’im Rashid. He leaves 19 grandchildren who loved and adored him and dotingly called him “Papa”: Taishawn, Chartese (Bryan), Quinn, Xavier, Sydney, Cecely, Jadeon, Clyde Jr., Aneesah, Willie Jr., Najlah, Dylis, Tasiea, Nur Jr., Isreal, Josiah, Na’im Jr., and Zayne. He also leaves 6 great grandchildren: Sinoy, Jaelynn, Emory, Avory, Symphani, and Serenity and 3 great-great grandchildren, Ezra, Neveah, and A’riyaha, brother and sister in laws, and a host of cousins, relatives and friends.
