Dorothy Marie (Houston) Buckley

February 19, 1944 ~ August 9, 2020 (age 76)

Dorothy Marie Houston Buckley was born on February 19, 1944 in Bastrop County, TX to the late Lance Houston and Velma Powell Houston. On August 9, 2020, she wrote the final chapter of her earthly life.

She accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age at Mt. Olive Baptist Church and her love for Him was demonstrated through her volunteerism and service within her community.

Dorothy was raised in Austin, TX. She attended Blackshear Elementary and Kealing Middle school then moved to Dallas, TX, where she graduated from Lincoln High School in 1962. After graduating, she married Aron Buckley on September 8, 1962 and to this union one son was born, Deon Laray Buckley on August 7, 1963.

Dorothy furthered her education by receiving an Associate of Arts at Compton Community College in Compton, California then went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration from California State University, Dominguez Hills in Carson, California. She completed Graduate level coursework towards a Master of Education and Business Administration from St. Edward’s University and Southwest Texas State, now Texas State University.

Dorothy worked as an Investigations Accounting Examiner for IRS for many years.  She also was an Instructor for the U.S. Department of Labor, Gary Job Corp, both in Texas and Maryland, and as a mentor for The University of Texas AmeriCorps Program. Dorothy enjoyed volunteering and this was evident through her association and work with Volunteers in Service to America (VISTA), the American Heart Association, and Goodwill Industries where she served in a variety of roles. Through the years she was also employed with the City of Austin (Parks and Recreation), Travis County (License Registration), and Austin Community College as a typewriting instructor.

Dorothy was a loyal Dallas Cowboys fan, loved to sing and hang out at home.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Lance Houston, Velma Diggs and Dennis Diggs and her brother Willie Lawrence Houston.

She leaves to celebrate, cherish, and honor her life, son Deon Buckley (Symanthia) of Austin, TX, Antonio Buckley of Longview, TX, Jamal A.
