Billy Stanford Mercer was born to James Mercer and Lucinda Hansborough Mercer in Round Rock, Texas on October 25, 1945. He departed this life to be with our Lord on August 19, 2020. Billy attended school in Round Rock, Texas and attended Huston-Tillotson College. He played the trumpet and football while in school while excelling academically. He explored various careers as he began his journey through adulthood. He worked in retail sales at men’s clothing stores downtown Austin to management at Bealls Department Store in San Marcos, Texas.
He was a very supportive and nurturing father. He also was a stay at home grandpa who mentored and guided his grandchildren from PK through high school. He even volunteered at the PK center to assist during the Christmas celebration as Santa Claus to support his grandchildren’s school. Additionally, he was a Deacon at Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church where he enjoyed the brotherhood of his fellow church members and the monthly breakfast.
Sometimes in life we are fortunate enough to meet special persons whose lives are dedicated to making a difference in this world. BS was one of those persons. He leaves to mourn his death and cherish his life his wife of 41 years, Deanna Caillier Mercer. Their relationship was special and everlasting. His children include Damien Mercer Sr.; Billy Dee Mercer (Chessica Martin), Percy A. Morehouse III and Nicole Morehouse; his grandchildren include: Jasmine (Journee Marie), Isley “Ike”, Thomas James and Nicholas D'Angelo Sanders; Damien Jr.; Tamaya, Thiago and Chenoa Mercer and Jon Paul and Alyssa Morehouse; He leaves to mourn his brothers and their families: George Mercer (Velvee); Richard Mercer (Florence); Harry Mercer (Jeri); and Larry Mercer (Billie). He also leaves to mourn his passing a large number of relatives including cousins, nieces and nephews and church family at Mount Sinai.
Billy was preceded in death by his father, James Mercer; his mother Lucinda Mercer; brothers James and Edward Mercer and sister Francis Mercer.
Billy always offered support to others including his family, their friends and anyone he came in contact with who were trying to get through a situation or get out of a valley. He focused his life’s journey on the words of the song by Marvin Sapp, “Never Would Have Made It Without You.” Many young men and women have shown up at his home upon hearing of his death to say I loved “grandpa.” He mentored many young people in his life and will never be forgotten. His life did make a difference in this world.
