Mattie Capton Baylor Garrett “Granny” was born May 17, 1926 in Clarksville, Austin, Texas to proud parents Rev. W. B. Baylor and Annie Drake Baylor and was raised in LaGrange, Texas. Mattie was the fourth child born to this union.
In making Austin her home, Mattie met and married the love of her life Cleo Lawis Garrett May 16, 1951 and to this union five children were born.
Mattie was baptized and professed her love of Christ at an early age and upon making Austin her home she united with Rosewood Avenue Baptist under the leadership of the late Rev. G. M. Releford. She later united with Loyalty Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Eulon Brown, Sr. Mattie later moved her membership to be with her children to New Hope Missionary Church under the leadership of Rev. Roy F. Jones, II where her membership remained. Mattie loved the Lord and in her walk with Christ she served in different areas faithfully, as Mission President, Sunday School Teacher, Usher, Choir member and church Mother of New Hope Church. Her most joyous position held was bring on the battlefield for Him, worshipping, praising His Name and a prayer warrior for his children.
Mattie held positions in the workforce with AISD, IRS, Child, Inc. and Seek-N-Say Child Care before retiring.
Mattie loved the Lord, family, friends and life. She was preceded in death by her husband Cleo Garrett, oldest son Woodrow Garrett, father, mother, two brothers and two sisters.
She leaves to cherish her memory four children, Rev. Willie W. Garrett of Austin, Texas, Margarett A. Garrett of Cedar Park, Texas, Deacon James C. Garrett, Sr. (Tracey) of Hutto, Texas and Mary M. McNairy of Austin, Texas; seven grandchildren, Chaquanna, Mondré, Tré Tanesheon, Tohi, Michael Jr., Toria and James, Jr.; four great grandchildren TiYanna, Maleigha, Harmony and Jabez; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, loved ones and friends.
