Mary Lucy McShan was born in Youngs Prairie, Texas on May 15, 1935. She was the youngest of seven children from Leroy and Lucy McShan, rural farmers in Bastrop County. Her early life was on the family farm and consisted of caring for livestock and taking care of her father, who was a disabled WWI veteran, and her grandmother, a former slave who lived to be over 100 years old.
She was raised in a strong Christian family and professed hope in Christ at an early age. She was baptized at the Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Elgin where her brother E.R. McShan was the pastor for over 45 years.
Mary was the first of her siblings to go to college and she graduated from Huston Tillotson University in 1956 with a B.S. in Elementary Education. She married Thaddeus A. McDonald on March 11, 1957. Their union thrived for over 60 years.
Her teaching career began in 1960. She taught the fourth grade for the Austin Independent School District for over 32 years at Simms Elementary and later at Zilker Elementary until her retirement in May of 1992. While teaching, she achieved her Masters of Supervision in Education at Prairie View University in 1963
Thaddeus and Mary have been faithful servants of First Baptist Church on Heflin Lane for nearly fifty years. She was active in the Baptist Training Union, Vacation Bible School and taught the Primary Learners class in Sunday School. Her warm smile and willingness to help the community and family will always be remembered.
She is survived by her husband, Thaddeus A. McDonald Sr., brother Shifton McShan, Sister Marjorie Clayton, children Thaddeus McDonald Jr. and Mayerland Harris, and grandchildren Brandon Harris, Ashley Harris, and Michelle McDonald.
