Janet Fay Mays was born to the late Cordia T. Mays and Martha B. (Mercer) Mays on May 21, 1937. Janet attended public schools in Austin, TX and graduated from the old L.C. Anderson High School. Amongst other activities, she is remembered as head majorette for the "Yellow Jacket" marching band.
After graduating from high school, she attended Brackenridge School of Nursing, and was degreed as an LVN. Professionally, Janet worked at Brackenridge Hospital prior to leaving the Austin area. She worked at Methodist Hospital, and M.D. Anderson Cancer Center (Houston, TX) for several years before she returned to Austin, Texas. She began her second career working as a nursery attendant at Faith Lutheran Church until the age of 75 as her health declined.
Janet was a very loving, caring and compassionate person. Those that knew her, knew that she would put everyone’s interest and concerns ahead of her own. Some of her greatest joys were spending time with her family, collecting dolls, and watching sports. On Thursday, July 12, 2018, the Lord called home one of his angels.
Janet was preceded in death by her parents Cordia and Martha Mays, daughter Kathy Holmes; and husbands Arnette Holmes and Willie Carslile. She leaves behind in God’s hands her two daughters; Darlene Blue and Pattrina Carslile; two grandsons, Rhedd Coney and Rodney Limuel Jr.; two granddaughters, Valencia Coney and Kathy Coney; and six great grandchildren. She also leaves behind in God’s hands a host of relatives and many, many friendships.
