Cyrus Ambrose

November 9, 1942 ~ May 19, 2018 (age 75)

Cyrus Ambrose III, known by family and friends as “Bodie”, was born on November 9, 1942 to the late Sy Ambrose, Jr. and Sarah Louis Ambrose. He returned to his eternal peace on May 19, 2018. Bodie was born and raised in Baton Rouge, LA. Impressively, Bodie was a self-taught drummer and as a young man began traveling around the county playing drums with Joe Valentine and The Imperial Band. He also traveled as a drummer for the renowned musician Joe Tex taking him to various countries around the world. Playing drums brought him great joy and traveling exposed him to lots of different people. While traveling with Joe Tex in 1966 Bodie decided to remain in Austin, TX. After his baptism by Reverend A.W. Anthony Mays, he started his service to the church by playing drums for the Music Ministry at Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church. He was a regular and faithful attendant at Sunday school and noon-day Bible study.

After settling in Austin, Bodie worked for the City of Austin for 23 years until he retired in 2001. After retiring, he started his own cleaning business and continued working tirelessly until his illness took its toll and he was forced to stop when his vision became impaired. Outside of work, Bodie took great pride in preparing delicious meals for his family and friends. Bodie was known for his great ingenuity in being able to recycle and repurpose almost anything for a new, creative use. Anyone he loved knew that they would be well-taken care of because of his generous spirit. However, his greatest joy was taking care of his family and children, all the way down to the little things like making sure his grandchildren had their favorite afterschool snack stocked at his home.

Cyrus “Bodie” Ambrose leaves to cherish his memory his wife Dorothy L. Ambrose; last living aunt Hazel L. Jones; two sisters Emma L. Ambrose (Will T.Ballard) and Bertha A. Coleman; children: Jennifer Parker, Traci Lloyd, Michael Lloyd, Terrance Cairo, Sr.(Sabrina), Lazeric Ambrose, Ambrose Roach, Melissa Castillo, Jamail Harris, Marche Ambrose, Deambra Ambrose and Sara Castillo; 30 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He has a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. Bodie was preceded in death by his father, mother, and several aunts and uncles.
