On March 12, 1935, Alberta, the youngest of six children, was born to her loving parents, Preston Sr. and Edna Taylor in Lockhart, Texas.
Alberta accepted Christ at an early age and became a member of East Nineteenth Street Missionary Baptist Church. She attended the Austin Public Schools.
Alberta was a very hard-worker! She worked for the Travis State School for several years, and retired after more than 20 years of dedicated service with the Austin Independent School District.
One thing Alberta always believed in was family! She met and married James “Pokey” Willie Spence, Sr., and from their union came three beautiful children: Paul, James Willie, Jr., andt Cahy. She will be remembered for being a devoted wife, loving mother, and a selfless nurturer to her family. She enjoyed home-crafting and used her cooking talent as her creative outlet. She would spend hours in the grocery stores! Alberta had a love for sewing, sharing her special recipes, shopping, and spending quality time with her family.
Alberta, was always willing to help others, a friend in time of need, and a wonderful woman who simply loved life! Throughout her 83 years of life, she touched and impacted the lives of many people. Her legacy will live forever!
On June 5, 2018, Alberta answered God’s call and said goodbye to her earthly home. She was preceded in death by her husband, Pokey, her sons: Paul and James Willie Jr, her parents, her brothers: Edward, Preston Jr., and Ira, and sisters: Mary and Ola Lee.
She is survived by and leaves to cherish her memory: her devoted daughter, Cathy Spence; five grand-daughters: La Conia (Rodney), Yolanda, Tracy (Charles), Ashley (Jerome), and Chardell; eight great-grandchildren: Bradley, Malik, Khadijah, Destiny, Makayla, Deasia, Jerome Jr, and Zuri; two great-great granddaughters: Kyndall and La’Myya; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends whose lives she touched profoundly along her journey.
