Obituary for George Johnson

Brother George Johnson was born on March 15, 1940 to George Johnson, Sr., and Alberta Walker Johnson. George joined church at an early age and singing in the choir was one of his given talents.

Brother Johnson met and married Mary B. Lee Johnson. They have been married for fifty-four (54) years. To this union two daughters were born. Brother Johnson was a member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, Lockport, Illinois, under the leadership of Reverend Richard D. House. He served in the Greater United Choir, men’s chorus and a church Trustee. Upon relocating to Pflugerville, Texas, Brother Johnson and wife Mary united with the Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church, under the leadership of Pastor A. W. Anthony Mays. George continued his ministry with the choir and men’s ministry.

Brother Johnson is a graduate of New Roads High School in Louisiana. George has owned and operated a furniture company and later, a moving company. He retired with twenty-five years of service at Caterpillar Incorporated. George served as a member in the Kings of Harmony Quartet. His hobbies included restoration of all types of cooking grills, building and restoring benches, moving and hauling items for others.

Brother Johnson was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Cynthia Johnson Jones; and brothers Earnest Johnson and Leroy Johnson. He leaves to cherish his memory, wife Mary B. Lee Johnson, daughter Carlenthia Johnson, Joliet, Illinois, sisters – Vera Lee (Tom), Joliet, Illinois; Carolyn Gross, Chicago, Illinois; Audrey Johnson, Lockport, Illinois; brothers – Eddie Johnson, Joliet, Illinois; Arthur Johnson (Mary), Peoria, Illinois; Calvin Johnson (Sandra) Monroe, Georgia; He is the grandfather of Latashala Johnson, Latoya Johnson, Chenell Jones and Chance Barrett; and the great-grandfather of five. Brother Johnson is the godfather of Minister Brandon Dorris (Melody), Park Forest, Illinois; Byron Dorris, Joliet, Illinois; and Shirley Franklin of Louisiana. He leaves a host of relatives and friends.
