Obituary for Doris Ray Roland

Born to be a legend, Doris Ray Talley was born to Edmonia (deceased) and Madison Talley (deceased) in the Alamo City, San Antonio, Texas, June 12, 1937.

There she grew up with her siblings Hazel Marie, Don Allen (uncle Buddy) and Millie Lee (deceased, aunt Mittie).

At a tender age, she was united in marriage to John Henry Roland. To this union three children were born, John Henry (Sharon), Bertha Delorce and Nelwynne Joyce (Boomie).

During this time, she moved to Austin, Texas a well known woman, yes she was! Sister Roland had no family here, but with arms open wide, the Carters and Rolands became her family. She remained close with the families, even after she became divorced.

Not shortly afterwards, she was introduced to the Moores. Sister Johnnie (deceased), Joyce (deceased), Ida and Jessie. They became her lifelong friends, her family and introduced her to Greater Love Baptist Church where she has a been member ever since.

In her earlier years she played softball. You could not beat her at playing Bid Whist, Pokeno nor Spades. Let’s not forget she was also an entrepreneur. Wow, she could sell anything. She was an avid sports fan, mainly the sports her grandchildren would partake in.

She raised four generations of grandchildren. Up until the age of 79, you could find her at anything her grandchildren were participating in!

Sister Roland retired from the Austin State School. She worked there for 29 ½ years. While working at the Austin State School, she met Lucille Odem (deceased) and Marie Spence. These two ladies assured that she got to work because she could not drive. Marie and Doris had an endless friendship until her death!

Sister Roland loved helping her family and others. She was in commercials, participated in feeding the needy. Most of all, the pantry at Greater Love. She looked forward to helping Pastor Michael Moore start the church pantry but God called her home before she could!

Sister Roland loved all her grandchildren, nieces, nephews near and far: Nelwynne II, Donald and Donavon Williams, Germonica and Levar Roland, Jared Roland, Lorie and a multitude of grandkids, step grandkids and close family.
